ABSTRACT

Additive Manufacturing processes are quickly establishing themselves as disruptive manufacturing technologies, relying on digital manufacturing concepts to achieve previously unattained design and manufacturing flexibilities. From precision engine parts to entire automobiles; the implications have been far reaching. As AM technologies continue to evolve into full production technologies, data promises to be a driving factor. Increased curation efforts and new monitoring techniques are quickly transforming a once sparse resource into an abundant source for knowledge. This presentation will look back at the evolution of AM data sets and discuss emerging data analytics opportunities in AM.

BIOGRAPHY

Paul Witherell, Ph.D. is a Mechanical Engineer in the Systems Integration Division of the Engineering Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Paul received his Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2009. He manages a project on Systems Integration for Additive Manufacturing and serves as the Associate Program Manager of the Measurement Science for Additive Manufacturing program in the Engineering Laboratory. Research efforts aim to leverage engineering and information sciences to benefit design flexibility, cost, and cycle times in additive manufacturing (AM).
